Reddit citations plummet on ChatGPT. In the era of AI search, how should the marketing channel mix be planned?

AI Summary

The rapid decline of Reddit's citation rate on ChatGPT to below 80% highlights how quickly platform influence can change in the AI ecosystem. This change suggests that the utilization and sustainability of data directly impact platform value, revenue models, and negotiation power. Therefore, in the AI era, it becomes crucial to monitor and respond in real-time to how much data is continually utilized, rather than just the content itself.

Last September, Reddit sent an unexpected signal to the market.

Reddit, which had been receiving positive reviews thanks to its close collaboration with AI technology, began experiencing sudden traffic fluctuations and a decline in its stock price. In particular, the release of data on how much Reddit content was being cited by ChatGPT sparked a reevaluation of Reddit's strategy and platform value.

According to Promptwatch, an AI search tracking platform, as recently as mid-September, over 14% of ChatGPT responses cited Reddit content. However, within a few weeks, this percentage plummeted to around 2%—a drop of over 85% in a short period. This figure shocked the market, causing Reddit's stock price to fall for two consecutive days, dropping by over 12% in a single day.

ChainShift also analyzed Reddit citation rates based on 2.5 million AI search data from July 1 to October 1 for Korean users. The results were similar. Analysis based on Korean prompts also showed a short-term decline of 87.5% starting in mid-September, consistent with global data.

Some attribute this sharp decline to changes in Google's search algorithm. Indeed, between September 10th and 14th, Google removed the &num=100 parameter, which caused data collection issues in major SEO tools like Semrush and Ahrefs. Since US users have long preferred community-based, practical answers by including the keyword "Reddit" in their searches, a decline in Reddit's presence in Google search results could directly impact ChatGPT's citation rate.

However, the situation is different in Korea.

Reddit-based prompting is rare in Korean-speaking environments, and Reddit provides content through an official API partnership with OpenAI, not Google Web Search. Nevertheless, it's noteworthy that English-language Reddit communities have been frequently cited in Korean-language content, particularly in the beauty and consumer goods sectors. Reddit wasn't just a "highly used platform," but a data hub with high-quality, practical content in specific domains.

At this point, what we should focus on is not simply the "citation rate," but the short-term fluctuations.

In the AI ecosystem, the value of a platform is determined not only by quantity but also by sustainability and the potential for expanded use. While Reddit has been recognized as a leading AI data partner due to its content quality and scale, a sharp decline in usage like this will inevitably have a significant impact on its negotiating power when renewing its license agreement.

Indeed, Reddit secured hundreds of millions of dollars in data licenses through collaborations with OpenAI and Google, making this data available for AI training. However, according to a Bloomberg report, Reddit is now discussing "dynamic pricing" in its next contract with Google. This structure allows Reddit to receive more revenue the more its content is used in AI. Ultimately, this sharp decline in citations has direct implications for Reddit's future revenue model.

Advertising remains the core of Reddit's business model. According to second-quarter results, advertising revenue increased 84% year-over-year to $465 million, accounting for 93% of total revenue. However, advertising revenue is absolutely dependent on platform traffic. This traffic can fluctuate significantly depending on factors such as Google's search algorithm, AI platform citation policies, and changes in user search behavior. The stock price decline last quarter also reflected market anxiety about this volatile traffic base.

Of course, this sharp decline in citations may not necessarily indicate a long-term decline.
Hedgeye Risk Management analyst Andrew Friedman said, "It's too early to call this a long-term trend," but he analyzed that this data could be leveraged as a bargaining chip in future licensing renegotiations. He noted, "OpenAI and Google have much greater negotiating power than Reddit," adding that Reddit is not in a position as advantageous as some might think.

Ultimately, Reddit is a platform facing both opportunities and challenges in the AI era. The more AI services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity rely on Reddit content, the more Reddit's data value and bargaining power will increase. However, if this dependence decreases, Reddit could be perceived as a "consumable resource" rather than a "data source." The future of a platform hinges not simply on current metrics, but on how strategically that data is reused in the future.

From ChainShift's perspective, this trend is even more crucial.
The era of AI marketing we are witnessing is not simply a structure where answers are obtained with a single prompt, but rather a battle over which data exerts the greatest influence on AI. The Reddit case is a prime example of how data ownership and platform influence are clashing and reorganizing on AI platforms.

Furthermore, we are now facing an era where AI is dominating not only messages but also channels.

If even platforms with high-quality community content like Reddit begin to see less AI citations, brands will need to be more meticulous about which content to expose, on which platforms, and at what speed.

The key lies in "continuous monitoring" and "rapid response." The days of AI taking three to six months to incorporate learning data are now a thing of the past.
Thanks to enhanced web search, lightweight models, and advancements in learning technology, we are entering an era where data can be incorporated into AI responses within one to two weeks.

The ability for brands to analyze AI content and channel exposure structures in real time and respond accordingly is no longer an option but a survival requirement.

And within that, maintaining a brand's unique identity and consistency is crucial.

It won't be easy, but this is the new market reality we face.

The key now is whether we can move beyond being mere content providers to a symbiotic and mutually beneficial structure with AI.

And this isn't just a Reddit issue.

Future content platforms, brands, and companies must work together to address this challenge.
